The only woman of color on the Supreme Court, Justice Sotomayor, is the only sitting justice on the Court with negative net worth, further illustrating how the racial wealth gap operates at all levels. Ginsburg and Breyer are the wealthiest judges on the Court.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor – $22,500 in the red – Sotomayor, the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic justice and its most recent appointee, is by far the least well-off. She is one of just two justices to report a liability and the only one to report more than one. In 2009, she owed between $15,000 and $50,000 to her dentist, and as much as $15,000 a piece to four credit card companies: American Express, Discover Card, Mastercard and Visa. Additionally, she is the only justice to report holding no stocks or bonds. Her net worth could be as low as $95,000 in debt or as high as $50,000 in the black.
