From usteachers4haitianteachers:
In Haiti, students and teachers go back to school in October.
To kick off [Institution Educative] Nathanael’s 2011-2012 school year, we are organizing our 2nd Annual “Back to School for Haiti” fundraiser. Mark your calendars for the evening of Thursday, October 6th. We hope you will be able to join us! More details to follow.
Today I listened to an interview with Dr. Paul Farmer, the founder of Partners in Health, who has worked in Haiti for over thirty years. He was reflecting on Haiti after the earthquake and a few things he said stayed with me:
“Haiti has a lot of fairweather friends, in and out… who have already left Haiti, and yet there are still these huge problems of housing, infrastructure, rubble clearance, and basic provision of services like healthcare and education.”
We hope to be true friends to Nathanael. We would like to provide consistent support for students: access to books and learning materials, differentiated instructional strategies, daily meals, a safe space to play. And for teachers: a living wage, access to a variety of learning materials to engage students, continuous professional development.
