From ImmigrationProfBlog:
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on the house version of the VAWA Reauthorization bill which contains DANGEROUS provisions that endanger victims of violence and undoes years of bipartisan support for immigrant women. HR 4970, sponsored by Adams (R-FL), passed out of the House Judiciary Committee last week on a vote of 17-15. If passed, H.R. 4970 will eradicate important confidentiality protections for victims of violence, undermine anti-fraud protections and eliminate a path to citizenship, leaving immigrant women vulnerable and at risk of further abuse.
Take a moment to call your Representatives and urge them strongly oppose H.R. 4970, a law that effectively eradicates protections for immigrant victims of violence, protections that have been in place for almost 20 years and have received bipartisan support.
CALL HOUSE LEADERSHIP NOW!
Speaker John Boehner (R-OH): 202-225-0600 (Leadership Office)
Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), (202) 225-4000
Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), (202) 225-2915Sample Script:
“Hi my name is ________ and i call I’m calling to urge you to strongly oppose the Adams bill, H.R. 4970 which puts victims of violence in further danger of abuse. I urge you to oppose the Adams bill because it rolls back protections for victims of violence. It is DANGEROUS for survivors of violence. The House Judiciary Committee did NOT pass a REAL VAWA and we need the House leadership to stand strong for survivors of violence and oppose H.R. 4970!”
