CMP has been in summer mode as we all pace ourselves and save up energy reserves for the Fall cycle. So here we are in the final week of July! As we approach the final three months of the 2012 presidential election cycle, CMP is gearing up to do its part to help re-elect President Obama and help the Democrats win a majority in Congress. Starting this weekend — once we hit the final 100 days — CMP will post weekly political roundups and clarion calls for action every Sunday to help combat GOP misinformation and voter disenfranchisement efforts.
As we approach this final stretch, make sure you are registered to vote in your state and make sure you have all the appropriate identification you will need in preparation for November. Voter registration deadlines are fast approaching in many states. Make sure your parents and your grandparents have registered and have all the appropriate documents they will need. The passage of new voter ID laws is a war against the people’s right to vote at the ballot box and a calculated effort to disenfranchise people of color and elderly folks at the polls this year. Many will be turned away from the polls. Don’t be one of them. Don’t allow your relatives and friends to be among them. Information is and has always been power. And, remember, people like Sarah Palin and Glen Beck will vote — so skipping civic participation is not an option for the responsible and wise.
We are up against some powerful interests this year, not only money pouring in from superPACs and the Koch Brothers, but also a GOP galvanized by anti-black racism and xenophobia. As Joe Biden said, this election is a fight for the soul of America.
We cannot take for granted that Mitt Romney is a Bain-crony capitalist without any real convictions. This election will be close and it will be up to us to self-educate and educate others, not only on the candidates’ records and values, but also on the new voting laws.
We have too much at stake and need to galvanize fellow Democrats, progressives, and independents to vote and re-elect Barack Obama. We simply cannot afford a more conservative Supreme Court, anti-woman legislation, or more corporate welfare.
Barack Obama is the better candidate guided by a moral compass and more likely to produce tangible solutions that will benefit everyone:
While some of the financial regulatory reforms, like Dodd Frank and HAMP, have fallen short of what we truly need in the face of widespread fraud committed by the big banks and an ongoing mortgage foreclosure crisis, these reforms are a good start, given the obstacles in achieving such reform in the first place. And guess what? A GOP administration would only result in more deregulation, birtherism, McCarthyism, and oligarchy.
Given the totality of the circumstances, the President has had a stellar first term, notwithstanding GOP obstructionism and the GOP’s virulent racism unlike anything we have ever seen in any preceding presidency. In the President’s first term alone, he was able to repeal DADT, pass the PPACA, end the Iraq war, avert another Great Depression, bring Osama Bin Laden to account, halt the defense of DOMA in court, endorse marriage equality, consistently add more jobs to the economy, appoint two Supreme Court justices, and create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — to name but a few achievements.
It is time to bring it, folks. Let’s re-elect President Barack Hussein Obama. We must take nothing for granted.
In solidarity and peace,
Seeta
UPDATE:
100 Days Out Obama Campaign Day of Action – Saturday, July 28th
Saturday, July 28th will be 100 days until election day. To mark this, supporters of the President nationwide are participating in a day of Action to support President Obama’s reelection. There are two ways you can get involved:
1) Travel to Pennsylvania to assist with voter registration and voter contact. With a new ID law on the books, it’s important to register and educate as many voters as possible well in advance of election day. Buses will leave NYC in the morning of the 28th for the Philadelphia area and return around 8pm that evening. If you are interested in making the trip, or have any questions, please contact RSVP@nydlc.org with the subject line “Bus Trip”.
2) Phone bank from New York City. We will be running a phone bank from OFA HQ in Manhattan to recruit attorneys for the July 28th Day of Action. This is an important outreach opportunity and will lead directly to boots on the ground in critical Pennsylvania neighborhoods. If you have an hour to dedicated to the cause, contact RSVP@nydlc.org with the subject line “phone bank”.
