    • KayWhitlock

       @Vikki Hi, Vikki – and such gratitude for your work.

  • rubyr

    Wow! Kay, I am going to have to read this about a million times. So thorough. Thank you and there is no more important topic.

    I am fighting hard with myself every day to stop my loathing of these greedy people who would destroy the beautiful Earth and every person who is not white, male and rich (don’t know where they think people come from – hint-women).

    OT and I hope you don’t mind but this is so wonderful that I wanted to spread it around a little.

    Hey Seeta!! Hey Nancy!! Hope the OT link is okay.

    Deepest respect to all of you.

       @rubyr Hi, Ruby, and thank you.

      Re: fighting with yourself – it’s so hard not to get trapped in the hydraulic of loathing.  But you also have a powerful forward vision – and, unless memory mis-serves me, so does your faith community.  When I find myself spiraling into fury and resentment, I try to re-balance by thinking of the goodness and humanity of people who are simply trying to live decent lives, with a fair measure of economic stability, affordable and appropriate health care, good education, appropriate housing, and that stuff.  It brings me back to center.

      And you always return to your center.

      Thanks, as always, Ruby.

         @KayWhitlock Thanks so much, sweetness.

    • KayWhitlock

       @rubyr Ruby, I hope you will understand:  I don’t go to GOS.  Here’s a link that goes to youtube that might be the same.  I hope so!  On climate change:  Nye, Attenborough, Alley, Asimov:

    •  @rubyr hey rubyr!

      i continue to hope that these greedy people will be soundly defeated. Soon..

      No other way

      • rubyr

         @nancy a heitzeg

        The President just has to get outside the MOT (margin of theft) (not my term, I wish it was) also, the MOS (margin of suppression).

        No other way is right. I really feel that the soul of this country, the safety of the Earth and all that is sacred rides on it. I am truly and deeply afraid of what the Republican party has become.

  • badphairy

    Kay, thank you for this piece! The hate frame’s shortcomings are disturbing but it’s rarely discussed in a frank manner. More, please.

    • KayWhitlock

       @badphairy Thank you, badphairy!  Please download the full piece that Nancy linked to in the intro.  I am very likely to be writing much more about this.

      • badphairy

         @KayWhitlock  Downloaded and thank you.

    •  @badphairy Ame — you need Queer (In)Justice.. i will get you a copy

      • badphairy

         @nancy a heitzeg Oooh, Mandatory Winter Holiday Approacheth

  • this s always a stunning stat —
    Most law enforcement agencies within a state jurisdiction do not report any incidents. For example, in 2009, only 67 out of 413 agencies in Virginia; five out of 487 Georgia agencies reported incidents. Less than half the participating agencies in California reported incidents.–

    i remember looking at data sets where many states ( eg Mississippi) did not report a single ahte crime for almost a decade

    Right… enforcement is the key to this legisaltion

    • KayWhitlock

       @nancy a heitzeg Yes, it’s quite shocking how the federal hate crime reports reflect merely a fraction of those acts of hate violence that are reported – reported voluntarily, of course, and assessed according to inconsistent standards.  Most anti-violence agencies that are community-and constituency-based recognize that most acts of violence are never reported, for a variety of reasons, not least including the fact that many fear further abuse at the hands of law enforcement.  Their fears are not unfounded.

      •  @KayWhitlock yes — remembering so many stories form Queer (In)Justice

        and always Duanna Johnson

  • KayWhitlock

    Thank you, Nancy, and CI, for offering this forum.  Deeply appreciated.

  • Thank you as always Kay

    We are blessed to know you and always inspired by your bigger vision

    • KayWhitlock

       @nancy a heitzeg I truly believe we can talk about difficult issues without becoming polarized over them.

      And I feel blessed by the continuing presence of CI.

      •  @KayWhitlock yes

        The critique of the hate frame is such an important example.. it is easy to find it  appealing because it creates the illusion of some commitment to “equality”.. But as you note the enforcement reality is very different and the fall back to criminalizing institutions is just more law and order .. The hate frame approach solidifies — rather the solves — the problem

        • KayWhitlock

           @nancy a heitzeg And we are increasingly likely to see right-wing, white, anti-gay Christians claiming to be victims of “left-wing” or “gay” hate.  It’s already out there, and the longer version of my piece speaks to it.

          When legal language is power-evasive, its interpretation and enforcement is largely up to those in power.  That’s why, for example, G.W. Bush’s U.S. Civil Rights Commission began to go after “reverse racism” (sic).

        •  @KayWhitlock Sigh..

          “reverse racism” is one those finger son the blackboard terms

        • badphairy

           @nancy a heitzeg  @KayWhitlock Yes, yes it is.

        •  @badphairy  @KayWhitlock schreeeeeeeeeeeech!!! :)
