The Republican Party has taken control of the Senate in the US midterm elections, increasing their power in the final years of President Barack Obama’s presidency.
After gains in Arkansas, Montana, South Dakota, West Virginia, Colorado, North Carolina Iowa, Republicans clinched victory.
Mitch McConnell will become the Senate majority leader.
According to AP news agency, the party is also set to increase its majority in the lower House of Representatives.
