• “Because prison cannot be posited as victory.”

    yes indeed!

And this is just sadly too true as well:

Which “victims” matter and when?? Are women and girls sexually abused by men somehow less sympathetic than their male counter-parts?? Especially when they respond to abuse with violence?? Is homophobia an under-current that allows us to mitigate male violence in response to same-sex rape in a way that we never do for women/girls raped by men?

We need to ask the questions even we might not like the answers.

    •  @Vikki as you would always say Vikki — the quote i love so much —

      :for a world without cages..”

      Amen

    Signed and signed.

    This is infuriating.

  • Thanks Nancy — really hoping that the outcome here will be a good one.  Hope the MM picks this up and it gets national attention.  Amazing that we keep having these conversations over and over.  Death penalty needs to be abolished.  Period.

    • KayWhitlock

       @Seeta Amen, Seeta.

So grateful for your blog where these things can be exposed and discussed.

      •  @KayWhitlock The pleasure is mine.  Maybe there will come a day when my sort of blog won’t be necessary….

        • KayWhitlock

@Seeta On that day, we will all dance and have a celebration the likes of which none of us has ever seen.

      •  @KayWhitlock  @Seeta Second that!! Thanks – as always — seeta

    •  @Seeta Yes.. i think the major hope now will be the hearing and the hope for a stay.. No faith in Corbett and the pardons board has punted

      Fingers crossed

  • KayWhitlock

Thank you, Nancy.  And thank you for not shying away from the difficult questions.

In the Aileen Wuornos case, which this echoes, she was actually only convicted of killing Richard Mallory, whom she claimed raped her and that she fought and killed him in self defense.  That is the case in which neither her lawyers nor the prosecutors ever dug up – or disclosed –  readily available information held by the FBI that confirmed Mallory had previously served 10 years for rape.

This is a horrific abuse/violence rabbit hole.  And our society has decided to kill those who are damaged by repetitive, terrible sexual abuse instead of addressing structures and cultures of violence.

    •  @KayWhitlock Yes we must address structures and cultures of violence, not just individual case after individual case with no solutions save LWOP..

It is ironic that our society  and now too cjs says they care so much victims – impact statements and all that —  but only if the “victim” is not simultaneously the “offender” as well

      • KayWhitlock

@nancy a heitzeg And only if the whole horror can be used to score cheap political points.

    •  @KayWhitlock and yes i always believed m– still do — that Richard Mallory was self-defense..

      • KayWhitlock

@nancy a heitzeg Agree completely.  And if anyone had believed her then, or even just done a tiny bit of due diligence…

Aileen was not someone I’d want for my best friend.  But she had been horrifically and repetitively abused for much of her life.  She was no monster.

        •  @KayWhitlock how anyone even survived the horrors of her early life — including homeless in the woods of Michigan in winter — is remarkable to me

        • KayWhitlock

@nancy a heitzeg Imagine how strong she was; imagine how her life could have turned out so differently if our society made a real commitment to saving the lives so harmed by sexual/physical/emotional/spiritual abuse.

        • KayWhitlock

@nancy a heitzeg And I do not make a false hero of Aileen Wuornos, or Terry, or anyone.  What matters is that we recognize the humanity of all.

          Of all.

          Of all.

  • this may not be the most lucid post i have written..but we have to ask the questions.. we have to check the under-currents..

Peace to Terry Williams and all the best to those seeking his commutation

    • KayWhitlock

@nancy a heitzeg Amen.  Peace to Terry Williams.  He is not invisible to many of us; his life matters, too.
